Tajikistan has an area of 141, 000km2 about 2/3, of which consists hills and high mountains of the Pamir. Tajikistan is an agrarian country and agriculture is an important sector for poverty reduction. About 2 / 3 of Tajikistan populations depend directly on the 4, 6 million hectares of available agricultural land. Of which only 850, 000 hectares are flood pasture lands.
About 20% of the population lives in hilly and mountainous areas and their remoteness limit access of population to support from the government. Most of the agricultural land, which they use come from pasture, only 206 600 hectares - is farmland and orchards, as well as in these areas there is no large-scale irrigation systems. Rural poverty, the transfer of responsibility for the management of land, lack of integrated management of land, inappropriate farming and lack of access to technical assistant cause further land degradation. Most of the population now uses the mountain slopes for growing grain. In turn, land degradation exacerbates poverty in landslide, soil erosion and silting of waterways used for drinking water and irrigation. Nevertheless, these regions have good potential, if properly used. In addition to improving the lives of people in the highlands, the sustainable use of this potential of prevent further damages, will reduce the burden on plain land.
